At first glance, “Twelve Days in May” seems like a light, fizzy second-chance romance set at the Cannes Film Festival. But y’all – it is *so* much more than that. The story follows Lizzy Munro, a 30-something who works for the Scottish Film Board, drumming up business in Cannes during the festival. While she’s there, the sophomore film by industry darling writer/director Ciaran Flynn is debuting – and runs into a PR nighrmare when another writer/director claims he stole her film idea. As it happens, Lizzy and Ciaran know each other: they studied abroad in France together 12 years earlier, and things did *not* end well. Even so, Ciaran needs Lizzy’s help – to go on the record and vouch for him and his film. The magic in this book, though, is that while it delivers a first-rate second-chance romance, it’s also delivering the quiet YA story of what exactly happened between Lizzy and Ciaran all those years ago.The result is a moody, cinematic story that gives the characters space to thoughtfully work through the frustration and hurt and questions they’ve been carrying for years, and ultimately results in a swoony, sparkling love romance that feels earned in the best way.Though this book unfolds slowly, I was captivated by Lizzy and Ciaran’s story and loved every second spent reading “Twelve Days in May.”
