If you are a reader of the John Milton series, this book takes place 3 years after the conclusion of "The Cleaner". John Milton tries to rescue a mother and her teenage son from the gang that inhibits their neighborhood. His interference has some negative short term ramifications, but positive long term affects. The family has moved, changed their names, and is embarking on a new life. The son ( Elijah/Mustafa) has become a promising boxer with the talent and drive to compete on a global level. As his name and popularity increase, he's drawing the attention of others. Milton wants to congratulate and take pride in the young man he introduced to the sport. The gang Elijah left behind wants vengeance for the events prior to his disappearance from the neighborhood. This book tackles the world of gangs (and their mentality) and the sport of boxing. Money is a key driver in the decision making process, but does money garner respect? Does money impact the leverage of revenge? This is one of the themes that make you think. This is an enjoyable read if the violence doesn't bother you. Both street gang life and boxing are violent. There are moments of redemption and forgiveness that give the story balance. The length is perfect. I was enamoured by the structure of the novel. There is a countdown interjected into the events. What are you counting down to - Redemption, Revenge, or Christmas? (If this last sentence makes no sense to you, then read Twelve Days!!)
