Of the major historians of the first century AD, Suetonius merits special consideration.Unlike drier accounts, Suetonius infuses his telling with personal, revealing anecdotes. This makes for often astonishing, sometimes terrifying writing. In particular, his accounts of the reigns of Caligula and Nero reveal truth to the maxim that absolute power corrupts absolutely. Nevertheless, if we fail to learn such history might we be doomed to repeat it?His is not a technical, jargon-filled account, so it can be read at leisure. But I wouldn't classify this (quite) as bedtime reading. Nor would I recommend it for young children. But if you want to learn about a cradle of civilization that by many measures would be unsurpassed for 1500 years, I highly recommend this book.
